CLT-W Mathematics Achievement Systematic Review (MA-SR) 2010

The Center for Learning and Teaching in the West National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, administered by Montana State University, involved science and mathematics teachers working on doctoral degrees at five institutions of higher education. These institutions included Colorado State University, the University of Northern Colorado, Montana University, Montana State University and Portland State University. A major research project, directed by Dr. Paul Kennedy and Dr. R. Brian Cobb at Colorado State University, was conducted by then CLT-W doctoral fellow Dr. James J. Dugan.

Abstract of Study: A systematic review of interventions in secondary mathematics with at-risk students was conducted. The goal was to identify interventions most successful at improving mathematics achievement while reducing mathematics achievement gap. Effective interventions identified were (a) instructional interventions (cognitive and metacognitive approaches, cooperative learning, and peer tutoring) and (b) technology-based interventions.
